Which one of us will be spokesman? They only want one designated contact person.

@ Hexapod: I posted the things we talked about on the Official Weekly Submission Thread, and we got a response. Check them out, and let's plan our next move. 2

Hey, sorry, I haven't been responding. Been busy lately I do think we should except their gifts, but we obviously must be careful.

"Beware the smiling Turk." I guess that works for Turkmen, too. I thought you'd quit--glad you didn't. This Forum posts wierd. I checked yesterday, and didn't see your post, but it's datestamped as yesterday morning. Yeah, we'll take them up on their offer. I'm going to be affable and very paranoid (The wise Ruler trusts no one). I've got to go with what I came up with because we're out of time, but I want to talk each subsequent move over before I post it. We're actually negotiating with the Turkmen and the Russians--i'll catch you up on that after I post the move. Delta-v

Whoof, done. That should tickle someone's fancy.
The Turkmen want food and fuel. Food we have, fuel, not so much. We'll have to see what they want.
We want horses
The Russians have opened negotiations, but haven't given any specifics as yet. I'll have both groups include you in their posts so you know what they say--and, no, I don't trust them.

Here's what I'm up to:
We have no need of machinery parts per se, it was a distraction to mask our need of horses, but if we can get trucks, that would help. The berries are another head fake because if we can get enough furs, we can make cold weather gear to keep our fighters alive in the mountain cold.
Putting the Russian Embassy in Sumqayit keeps them where we can keep an eye on them, and the fishing fleet can easily keep track of their ships so a troop transport disguised as a freighter, say, won't make an unscheduled stop somewhere along the way.
Their request for cotton is most probably a mask for their need for lead and oil, but we'll play dumb for now and see how things develop.
The Turkmen's silence worries me a bit.

rat from the Russian Faction sent a quick reply to our offer, but didn't say what they had brought with them. Most of the post was stalling about truck/tractor parts, and speaking of the virtues of wood-gasification plants.
He did add tires, rubber, steel, and tungsten to their list of wants, and specified that they wanted crude oil rather than refined products, and said that they also produced kitchenware, hand tools, and hunting crossbows.
The only thing that wood-gas generation has going for it is that it can save on oil usage. It takes a disappointingly large amount of energy to produce the wood gas, and even more to compress it to manageable form for storage.
The crossbows have some possibilities for silent sniping, though.

Don't forget that if they don't have anything you want you can just say no Or you can try to trade for information. They've done some exploring into Minerva's territory.

Both groups seem to think that I know what they sent with their emissaries. Did I miss something?

Well you can always message them for clarification. I'm not sure. I think the Russians sent a lot of wood and stuff? The Turkmen didn't bring much with them besides the trinkets that were examples of pre-war stuff. Most of their stuff they left at home, and they're just negotiating trade agreements at the moment?

Amberlight reminded me that the Russians also asked for raw cotton, so please add that to the list of trade goods.

Mostly I'm establishing that it would be extremely hard to sneak up on either the strike force or the homeland, That I'm not just pulling things out of midair, but giving a basis and rationale for the ability to do things I may later have to defend to the other gamers, that the Caliph is a paranoid SOB who isn't afraid to use the Hashashim, and that my favorite people to deal with are the ones who underestimate me. What my spies are mostly for is to sniff out potential trouble, and to mollify the people who live in the area we're going to be traveling through by making cooperation more profitable than resistance. No matter how things go in the main battle, we don't want to have to fight our way home afterwards.

In my opinion, we need some advantage on our "allies," and something hidden. I see that in one of the last offers they were offering Hunting Crossbows, given enough training, we could use those men as a spy network, hunters and all make for some decent ears, as well as keeping meat and game stock as one of our steady gains through the time ahead, but we would also need to exercise caution as to how much land we farm, how rigorously we farm the land, and how long we give the land to recover. All of these things can eventually lead to small harvests and the possibility of no harvest at all, which would be a rather heavy cause for alarm. Fishing, Game hunting and Farming all need to be kept a close eye on for these reasons. We should also allow for easily accessible arms on fishing vessels in case of raiding parties or whatnot that may occur. There are the possibility of small bandit parties that could be patrolling fishing waters looking for some slaves to sell off to the market. These are all just thoughts running through my head for the moment being while trying to understand our position as a super power in this destroyed world, as well as wrapping my head around the possible motives behind our neighbours actions and requests.
