As the The Doom’s Day arrived, Russia’s situation was already dire.
The economy was collapsing due to the energy crisis which caused significant social unrest, as people were extremely unhappy by the rapid decline of their level of life. Two years of famine caused food shortages in several regions which made the situation even worse. In the end the social discontent reached it’s peak and erupted in several revolts that were subsequently suppressed – with severe brutality.
Despite the fact that all anti-government uprisings were suppressed and the economy started to recover thanks to the established centralized control over the resources and production, Russia’s problems were far from over, as neighboring countries and terrorist organizations decided to take advantage of it’s weakened state.
New War on Terror in Northern Caucasus, Chinese invasion in the eastern regions, occupation of Kaliningrad and skirmishes on Ukrainian borders threatened to tear the country apart.
The last drop was an invasion of USA’s Pacific Fleet into sea of Okhotsk and following occupation of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
Soon the world was set on fire.
Scores of nuclear missiles soared above the Earth, making their way to USA and China, purging the land from the enemy cities. But they refused to idly watch their countries burn and unleashed deadly nuclear barrage of their own.
This insanity took over other countries. All those who had the power of nuclear fire in their disposal unleashed it upon the enemy – as retaliation or preventive measure. As the fiery genie was let out of it’s bottle once to conquer the Middle East it was not too hard to set it free again. But Russians didn’t care about it anymore.
Russian cities were set ablaze. Millions died in an instance. Dozens of millions fled populated area, seeking refuge, but radiation, lack of food, diseases and malice of their own kin took lives of many.
It wasn’t so for the government. Foreseeing the disaster, government ordered to secretly refurbish old nuclear shelters and build new ones east from Ural Mountains. Although construction was not finished, built facilities were well-capable of sheltering the most important (as much as the government was concerned) people from the nuclear Apocalypse.
Several days before the nuclear strikes were issued members of the government, their families and most influential members of the oligarchy were transported to the shelters, guarded by the elite military units. They were joined by the top scientists, engineers and workers, along with other personnel required to ensure survival and comfort of the Russian elite.
Rest of the population was left without centralized command. Military units left out of shelters tried to upkeep peace and order among the survivors, but when the Long Winter hit many of them abandoned the people, conserving supplies for themselves.
However, some were adamant in their goals of protecting their people from the dangers of this new world.
During the Long Winter several military units joined their forces and formed an organization they named Russian Directorate, which’s goal was the protection of refugees and creation of a new society on the ruins of the old world.
During those harsh years brave men and women of Directorate protected the refugees from raiders and marauders, scavenged for food, medical supplies, machinery and everything else that could help in survival.
Despite their best effort, many did not survive the Long Winter. Constant need for more supplies and radiation made them move farther and farther to the east, crossing Ural mountains. At the end of the Long Winter, exhausted and battered, they, unaware of this fact, settled in the Evacuation Area where the old government was building their new society.
Finally discovering more hospitable lands, Directorate began establishing settlements in the newly acquired territory.
During the next ten years the Directorate did it’s best to overcome multitude of difficulties it faced, as well as the other organizations in this region. Few of those encounters were peaceful. As it’s population grew with more settlements accepting it’s rule in exchange for protection, so did Directorate’s need for resources and agricultural lands. To meet those demands the Directorate, by then renamed to New Russian Federation, began expanding east. That’s where it finally encountered the army of the old government.
All those years the elite of old Russia lived in a relative comfort, removed from the horrors of war. However, their resources were not endless, and several years after the Long Winter their military force began expanding in the territories around the shelters, forcing neighboring communities under their rule and making them repair the old infrastructure and build a new one to supply shelter-dwellers.
As the governmental army encountered NRF’s forces, the command found them a threat to their rule on the land they claimed for themselves. Shortly an order to drive NRF out of the Evacuation Area was given.
Faced with an armed response, NRF decided to fight back as their survival depended on those newly-acquired lands. And when they learned of their enemy’s identity people of NRF were eager to set their score with the government that abandoned them not so long ago.
Thus a long conflict began. Skirmishes and battles were sometimes followed by months of quite, but inevitably started anew. In time the old government gained the upper hand, as they possessed far more military resources than NRF.
In time NRF sent part of their forces and civilians west, in the area around old Orenburg they abandoned before to create a rear base in those harsh, but still habitable lands.
The conflict went it’s course for many more years. With time some of NRF forces separated and ventured to where Kazakhstan once was or joined the old government, surrendering to he promises of a better life.
The war ended when NRF army was defeated in a decisive battle at the town of Verticos. Losing the power to hold their lands in the territory occupied by the old government NRF was forced to hastily evacuate to their last citadel at Orenburg.
Many people and resources were lost during this retreat, but the old government decided to not pursue NRF as the conflict took it’s toll on their resources as well.
Now the New Russian Federation is merely a shadow of it’s former self. It’s main goal is to ensure the survival. It’s people are weakened but not broken. They are determined to rebuild their society and create their own prosperous civilization and make the old government pay. To that end NRF is prepared to do all it takes. No drastic measure is off-limits.
