I like the idea that each tribe will have a specific culture of modified animals. One could have camels, another dogs, another would have fennecs ...

How about making insects main food for the faction?
It could be good, but I think they could also eat modified goats. A tribe raise them and then "sell" them to other tribes. Eating always the same stuff is boring and (maybe) unhealthy.
how unusual do Turkmen look for people from other factions?
I thought they'd look normal, but they will have some tumors on the body (because of the cancers, but maybe they're more resistant to them). Or maybe the face burned by the radiations ? But yeah definitely not only a different "tone" of skin.
And I think they could perfectly hide them under normal Tuareg clothes.
Maybe they use a gear that looks like Fremen only to go in the radioactive desert or for fighting ? Like some kind of special outfit better for hand fight.
