US patrols in Afghanistan are ambushed by heavy weapons, such as PK and PKM machine guns. I won't argue than US can produce an assault rifle that would have an effective range of a stationary machine gun on a tripod. Naturally, such weapon and ammo would cost more than a said machine gun and will demand longer and more expensive training for the soldiers.

Small things like forming a defensive formation in the open field or triggering an obvious trap with an explosive would not change the general outcome one way or the other. Parameters of the anti-armor weapon that destroyed Minervan APCs, deathbot's or mines affected only how much time, effort, ammo and manpower the attackers had to expend.
