They really ask for horses and artifacts from the desert. I think we can send a diplomatic mission (exchange ambassadors with them), and discuss exact number of horses and artifacts to give and amount of food and other supplies to take.
What artifacts we can give them?
1) Gift for the Caliph (a knife, or maybe an ancient Koran)
2) Something unusual and interesting as a gift for their women and children.
3) Something useful for (books with medical/technical information)...
