Please don't say that it was an evil AI, that is building robots to kill all humans (maybe exept Philip J Fry) because they will kill eachother anyway. Please!

Don't worry, it isn't that cliche. Even if it was an AI building robots, it wouldn't be an "Evil" AI wanting to KILL ALL HUMANS! I'm approaching the "bad guys" to make them as realistic and believable as the "good guys".

It's about population density. Before railways were built Mongolian population was very low. Railway became the source of food during famine years that were killing a lot of people in the region. The history of this region is a struggle for water. Second reason for Mongolian population being able to increase to it's current size is creation of health care system by Soviet Union in 30th years of XX century. It allowed to stop small pox that was a major reason of mortality. If the region looses the connection with an outer world - mainly the railway - it's population would rapidly decline to the tiny levels it had before XX century. So the only thing that could be found on the eastern borders of Minerva are several nomadic herder tribes. They won't matter at all, as they will have better thing than Minerva t worry about - like small pox and sand storms threatening their survival. Ambertranslate.

If I'm reading these ideas right, it sounds like Mad Max on the steppes!
I see the Mongols as very isolated throughout WW3, so maybe they are really objecting to ANYONE being near their borders. Perhaps, as Minerva grew, they strayed too close to the Mongols and now there is constant skirmishing on the borders...with the Mongols fighting both Minerva to their South, and the Russians and Chinese on the other flanks. They just don't want to share their natural resources with anyone who is not a Mongol. (Racist, isolationists, survivors....possibly feudal and/or inbred in the ruling classes?) Maybe a ruling Lord/Khan looking to make a name for himself is leading the attacks against the 'outsiders'?

Mongolia without modern agriculture can feed half a million people. Covering an area of 2.5 million square kilometers. At this population density from the village to the nearby village is three days' journey. Of course, if you know where this village is located. And if you do not know, you can wander around for months without seeing a single person.

Is this tread still open? Or should I be posting over here: thedemonarchives.freeforums.net/thread/15/faction-2-great-khanateHow would Inner Mongolia fit into this? It makes sense that the main cities would be devastated, but that's where most of the Han Chinese live. The smaller farming communities, particularly in the north are likely to fare much better. Many Mongolians in Inner Mongolia aren't big fans of Han Chinese either. New of a great new Khan in the North-west could draw a good deal of support from whatever is left of Inner Mongolia.
